8 Dangerous Household Products You Should Get Rid Of

8 household cleaning products you should get rid of

Who would have thought that simple household products and items we use daily can be life-threatening? The reality is that many of the things you are so used to are really bad for you and the people you love. This is because they contain chemicals that have the potential to kill you or make you very ill. So have a look at the below list and get rid of all these items if you currently have them at home. Don’t worry, we have provided a safe alternative that works just as well as these chemicals.

1.   Air fresheners

Air fresheners may look fancy and some of them have amazing scent. Unfortunately, behind all this are some deadly chemicals, which have been proven to cause cancer. One of them is formaldehyde. It can be extremely dangerous if inhaled and generally harms your eyes, lungs and skin.

Healthy alternative: You can replace the commercial air fresheners with natural products like heated orange and lemon peels or essential oils of your choice.

2.   All-purpose cleaning products

It is really tempting to buy the all-purpose cleaning products because they save you time and money. However, you should really stay away from these. They contain a cocktail of harmful chemicals that can react with different parts of your body and damage a series of organs and body functions.

Healthy alternative: There are a variety of DIY cleaning recipes and almost all of them include three-star ingredients – vinegar, baking soda and water. If making solutions sounds like too much hustle for you, just look for eco-friendly cleaning products on the market.

3.   Bleach

Avoid using bleach at all costs. Everyone knows that it is lethal if ingested, but very few people recognise the danger it brings to people that have simply been exposed to it. It can damage your whole respiratory system and irritate the skin. Don’t take the risk, protect yourself and your family.

Healthy alternative – White vinegar is pretty effective in treating the same type of spots and dirt bleach is used for. In contrast to it, though, it is a natural product, containing no health risks.

4.   Oven cleaner

Cleaning your oven is a pain. We get that. But the commercial cleaning products for this purpose are not safe for you. Just so you get the picture, we will tell you that oven cleaners contain lye, which is used to dissolve roadkill dumped in landfills.

Healthy alternative – Making a paste from baking soda and warm water will deal with most of the grease and grime. In addition, you can place a bowl with water and lemon juice in the oven on a low temperature for 2-3 hours to eliminate unpleasant odours.

5.   Anything that contains Triclosan

Triclosan is a chemical, often used in antibacterial products. It sounds good, but it really isn’t. Actually, it encourages the growth of superbugs, which can kill you or at the very least make you very sick. The scary part is, that Triclosan is also found in some toothpaste brands, body washes and fancy soaps.

Healthy alternative – read the labels and choose personal hygiene products that actually contain the word soap on the ingredients list. You can make your own toothpaste with baking soda, mint and some other natural products.

6.   Mothballs

Mothballs are also known as Naphthalene balls. They were quite popular in the 20th century as great repellent of moths. A lot of people still use them today, but this isn’t a good and healthy practice. Naphthalene is toxic and can cause severe headache and even breathing problems. They are poisonous if chewed or ingested.

Healthy alternative – check for cedar tree blocks, which are known natural moth repellent

7.   Detergent

That’s right, your detergent and fabric softener can kill you. They too contain cancerous chemicals that come in contact with your skin every time you wear your freshly washed clothes.

Healthy solution – Soap nuts are made of the fruit of the Chinese soap tree and are completely natural. Some supermarkets sell these products, but if you can’t find it on the shelves, search the internet for supplies.

8.   Deodorant/roll-on

You may be disappointed reading these lines, but we strongly urge you to get rid of any deodorant or roll-on stick you have at home. These products contain aluminium chlorohydrate, which, again, is a cancer causing chemical. It is one of the leading causes of breast cancer, as the harmful substance is absorbed by the skin and transmitted into the blood, then distributed to every part of the body.

Healthy alternative – Here’s a recipe for a natural deodorant you can make at home.
