Chewing gums are a total nightmare for thousands of moms. They always get stuck in places they really shouldn’t be – the child’s hair, clothes or on the precious new carpet. We can imagine one of you screaming “Oh, God, why?!”. Like wax, chewing gum is one of the things that is not easily removed from textile surfaces, but luckily, we have some hacks showing you how to get rid of a chewing gum on the carpet.
Freeze the Chewing Gum
One of the oldest and most common methods many use to get rid of a chewing gum on the carpet is by freezing it. Normally, the gum is soft and sticky and warm when you chew it, however, if you place an ice bag over a spot on the carpet affected by a chewing gum you should soon notice how it gets harder and much less sticky. This helps you remove it easily. Sometimes, it doesn’t work completely without the help of a knife or spatula to scrub out the remains. And even after you’ve gotten out the most part, some residue could stay, leaving a nasty stain on your beautiful carpet.
Melt the Chewing Gum
Ok, going the complete opposite, if freezing temperatures don’t help you get rid of a chewing gum on the carpet, try melting it. The easiest way to do that is by pouring boiling water over the affected spot. Use a knife or another sharp object to help you scrape off the remains so you don’t burn your fingers. We don’t recommend using a hair dryer or a candle to heat the chewing gum because the hot air from the dryer can leave burn marks on your carpet and a candle can start a fire or leave wax stains, which are also a pain to get rid of.
Use Oils to Get Rid of the Chewing Gum
You can also use some oils to make the chewing gum less sticky and get it out of your carpet. However, you should always test the oil you want to use on a small piece of the carpet to see if it will absorb well and not leave a stain before you proceed with pouring it over the chewing gum affected space. You could try:
- Peanut Butter
- Olive Oil
- Eucalyptus Oil
